Born in Omaha, Nebraska in 1924, "Bud " Marlon Brando was widely misunderstood; few knew he was a tortured soul, suffering from depression and loneliness. No one knew that "Bud" would become one of the greatest actors of the 20th Century. Both of Marlon Brando's parents were alcoholics; he was treated to quite a sight at age 14, coming home from school to watch his father beat-up his mother. A small part in a school play, and finally, enrolement in a New York acting school led Brando to find a halcyon escape from his troubled world. It was called acting. The actor could leave his real world of misery behind, and enter, for perhaps, a little while, a fantasy world of make-believe, where he was no longer himself; he was somebody else.More theater parts followed for Brando, and then, in 1947, he auditioned for director Elia Kazan and writer Tennessee Williams for the lead role in "Streetcar Named Desire". He got the part. He got a lot more. The movie version followed; so did fame and fortune. But Brando wasn't happy. Now people pestered him. Calling him.After him. He could never be alone. He loved New York(you could lose yourself there), but in Grand Central Station, unknown women would undo their blouses right in front of him. Brando loved women, but this was too much for the fragile actor. More sensitive parts followed in "On the Waterfront(1954)", Sayonara(1957)", "The Young Lions(1958)", "The Chase(1966)", "The Godfather(1972)", and "Apocalypse Now(1979)". Brando invested his own soul into "One-Eyed Jacks" in 1961, producing the film, and after firing director Stanley Kubrick, then directing the movie himself. Beautiful scenes in Big Sur and Monterey, California were completed, but Brando didn't like editing; Paramount Studios took over; chopping up his personal work. Brando was incensed. Hollywood let him down, and he would never trust them again. After that he did movies, any movies, just for the money. He was hired for "Superman" in 1978, earning $3.7 million for 13 days work. He needed money to pay for his life-style, his children, and three ex-wives. Brando bought his own private island in the South Pacific, a Polynesian atoll known as Tetiaroa in 1966. Brando lived there on-and-off until his death in 2004 at age 80. Here he would finance a generation of giant green sea turtles; releasing them into his lagoon off of Tetiaroa. Unhappy, Brando recorded personal messages to himself into a tape-recorder at his home. Brando reached out to the under- privileged( black community and the American Indians). But tragedy stalked Brando. His eldest son, Christian, was arrested for murdering his half-sister's(Cheyenne) boyfriend, Dag Drollet, in 1990. In court, Brando appeared haggard and over-weight, crying, and begging the judge for mercy for his son. Filmed interviews show a broken man. Daughter Cheyenne returned to the south Pacific. Turning to drugs, Cheyenne committed suicide in 1995. She was 25 years old. Brando told reporters: "Misery has come to my house.."William Mann's "The Contender" is a rambling expose, without any detailed reports on his movies(as he admits), and a tendency to jump back -and-forth in time. But there's a lot of truth here. Brando bought a home on infamous "Bad Boy Drive(Muholland Drive in the Hollywood Hills above Beverly Hills. Home to Warren Beatty and others)". Today this home is owned by Jack Nicholson.
